What Makes a Tracker Insurance Approved
and Why It Matters to Your Policy

Not All Trackers Are Equal
in Your Insurer's Eyes.

Insurance approved Trackers are not a marketing phrase, they are a specific Certification Standard. It refers specifically to products that have been independently tested and certified by Thatcham Research, the UK body that sets vehicle security standards on behalf of the insurance industry.

A tracker that has not been Thatcham certified is not insurance approved regardless of what the packaging says. Fitting an uncertified product when your insurer has required an approved one can leave your theft cover invalid, meaning a claim could be refused even if your vehicle is recovered.

There are two insurance approved tracker categories relevant to private vehicles:

Thatcham S7 – real-time GPS tracking, 24/7 monitored response and theft recovery. The most commonly required category for standard vehicles. Replaced the older Category 6 classification in 2019. If your policy references CAT 6 the S7 satisfies that requirement.

Thatcham S5 – everything the S7 provides plus Automatic Driver Recognition. Your vehicle moving without your ADR tag present triggers an immediate monitoring centre alert. The defining defence against relay theft and key cloning. Increasingly required by insurers for keyless entry vehicles, high-value cars and models that appear on high-risk lists.

S5 plus – a Thatcham S5 certified system with remote immobilisation added. The monitoring centre can prevent the engine from restarting in a confirmed theft once police authorisation is given. Often specified for prestige and performance vehicles.

H-Track supply and install all three. We will confirm which one your policy requires before we book your installation.

Reading Your Policy Requirement and Knowing Exactly What to Do

Your Insurer Has Specified a Category
here Is What It Means.

This is the section most tracker websites skip. H-Track’s view is that understanding your specific requirement is the most important step and we will always help you do this before you spend a penny.

Your policy says S7 or Category 6 The Thatcham S7 is your requirement. It is the most widely fitted insurance approved tracker and H-Track install it across all vehicle types in our coverage area. It provides 24/7 monitored protection and full recovery capability. Book your S7 installation with confidence.

Your policy says S5 The Thatcham S5 is your requirement. It adds Automatic Driver Recognition to the S7’s capabilities, the feature that identifies a theft the moment it begins rather than after it has happened. H-Track’s recommendation for any keyless entry vehicle is the S5 as a minimum regardless of what the policy states, because the risk profile of keyless vehicles makes the S5 the proportionate response.

Your policy says S5 plus or specifies remote immobilisation You require an S5 plus, a Thatcham S5 certified system with remote immobilisation. H-Track install these for prestige vehicles, performance cars and high-value SUVs where insurers have specifically required immobilisation capability. Note that remote immobilisation is not currently suitable for hybrid or electric vehicles, H-Track will advise on the appropriate alternative if this applies to your vehicle.

Your policy says you need a tracker but does not specify a category Call us before you book anything. This is more common than it should be and the right answer depends on your vehicle type, make, model and how your insurer assesses its risk profile. H-Track will give you a clear honest recommendation and if it turns out you need to clarify the requirement with your insurer first we will tell you exactly what to ask them.

Your insurer has referenced a specific brand or product Some insurers name a specific product on a high-risk vehicle policy. H-Track supply and fit products across the main approved brands. Call us with the exact requirement and we will confirm whether we can satisfy it directly or advise on an approved alternative.

Why Choosing the Right Installer Is Not Optional

A Valid Certificate
Requires a Registered Installer.

This is the detail that catches people out more than any other. A Thatcham certified tracker installed by an unregistered installer does not produce a valid insurance certificate. Your insurer will ask for the certificate. If it was not issued by a TASSA registered installer it will not be accepted, regardless of whether the product itself is certified.

TASSA, the Tracking and Aftermarket Security Systems Association, is the governing body that registers and regulates installer companies for insurance purposes. H-Track are TASSA registered. Every insurance approved tracker we fit comes with a valid certificate issued on the day of installation that your insurer will accept without question.

We also never subcontract. Every engineer who arrives at your vehicle is a directly employed H-Track team member, DBS checked, fully trained and accountable. Henry has over 20 years of vehicle security installation experience. Cheryll ensures that every certificate is issued correctly and that every insurer requirement is met before the job is closed.

When you receive your insurance approved tracker certificate from H-Track it is the right document, completed correctly by a registered installer. No chasing it up. No resubmitting because something is missing. Just a valid certificate ready to send to your insurer the same day.

Is Your Vehicle on Your Insurer's Required List?

The Vehicles Most Commonly Requiring
an Insurance Approved Tracker Today.

Insurers apply tracker requirements based on vehicle risk profiles. The following categories are most commonly affected and H-Track regularly install insurance approved trackers across all of them:

Keyless entry vehicles Insurers are placing greater emphasis on S5 requirements for keyless cars as of 2025. If your vehicle starts without inserting a key into the ignition your insurer may require an S5 as a minimum. Relay theft specifically targets keyless entry systems and the S5’s Automatic Driver Recognition is the direct countermeasure.

High-value and prestige cars BMW, Mercedes, Audi, Porsche, Range Rover, Land Rover Defender and similar models appear on insurer high-risk lists. Insurers now mandate trackers for high-risk models such as the Range Rover Sport, BMW X5 and Audi RS models. The specific category required varies by insurer and model, H-Track will confirm exactly what your policy needs.

High-value vans and commercial vehicles Tradespeople with high-value tools and equipment in their vans face insurer requirements that increasingly mirror those placed on prestige car owners. An insurance approved tracker on a van protects both the vehicle and the value it carries.

Previously stolen vehicles A vehicle that has been stolen and recovered carries a higher risk profile in the eyes of most insurers. A tracker requirement at renewal following a theft claim is common and H-Track understand the urgency that situation creates.

Modified and performance vehicles Modified vehicles with significant investment in parts and performance upgrades often trigger tracker requirements at renewal. The value of the modifications combined with the desirability of the base vehicle creates the risk profile insurers respond to.

How an Insurance Approved Tracker Can Reduce Your Premium

The Financial Case for Getting This Right.

For many H-Track customers the insurance approved tracker pays for itself at renewal. Thatcham certification is recognised by UK insurers as a measurable reduction in theft risk and recovery time and that reduction is reflected in the premium.

The saving varies by insurer, vehicle and the category of tracker fitted. For standard vehicles with an S7 the reduction is typically meaningful. For high-value vehicles with an S5 or S5 plus the saving can be more significant and for some vehicles the tracker is the only way to secure comprehensive theft cover at all.

H-Track’s recommendation is to contact your insurer before booking your installation and ask two questions. First, which Thatcham category do you require? Second, what reduction in premium can I expect once the certificate is provided? The answers to both questions will confirm the right product and give you a clear picture of the financial return on your installation.

We provide a full Thatcham installation certificate on the day. Your insurer will need this before any premium adjustment can be applied. We make sure it is ready before we leave.

FAQ

ask us
anything

An insurance approved tracker is a vehicle tracking system that has been independently tested and certified by Thatcham Research to meet the standards required by UK insurers. The two main insurance approved tracker categories are S7 and S5, with S5 plus available for vehicles where remote immobilisation is required. A tracker that has not been Thatcham certified is not insurance approved regardless of what the product description says. H-Track supply and install insurance approved trackers across Staffordshire, the West Midlands, Greater Manchester, Yorkshire, South Yorkshire, Merseyside, Nottinghamshire, Shropshire, Derbyshire, Leicestershire, Gloucestershire, Warwickshire, Powys, Flintshire, Herefordshire, Oxfordshire and Lincolnshire.

Check your policy schedule or renewal document for the specific Thatcham category required. If it says S7 or Category 6 you need an S7. If it says S5 you need an S5. If it says S5 plus or specifies remote immobilisation you need an S5 plus. If no category is specified call your insurer and ask directly, then call H-Track and we will confirm the right product and book your installation. Do not fit a tracker without confirming the category first as fitting the wrong one can leave your requirement unsatisfied.

Yes, this is more important than most people realise. A Thatcham certified tracker installed by an unregistered installer does not produce a valid insurance certificate. TASSA registration is the standard your insurer requires from the installer, not just the product. H-Track are TASSA registered and every insurance approved tracker we fit comes with a valid certificate your insurer will accept on the day of installation.

For most customers yes. Thatcham certification is recognised by UK insurers as a measurable reduction in theft risk and the premium reduction reflects that. The saving varies by insurer, vehicle and tracker category. H-Track's recommendation is to ask your insurer specifically what reduction to expect before booking so you have a clear picture of the financial return on your installation.

Most customers are booked within a few days of enquiring. Installation itself takes one to two hours and we come to your home or workplace across all seven of our coverage regions. Your Thatcham installation certificate is provided on the day, ready to send to your insurer immediately.

Some insurers name a specific approved product on high-risk vehicle policies. Call H-Track with the exact specification and we will confirm whether we supply and fit that product or advise on an approved alternative that satisfies the same requirement. We will never fit a product that does not meet your insurer's stated requirement.

No. Self-installation immediately invalidates Thatcham certification and the certificate your insurer requires will not be valid. An insurance approved tracker must be fitted by a registered installer to produce a certificate that satisfies your insurer's requirement. H-Track are TASSA registered and every installation is carried out by a directly employed engineer.

H-Track's recommendation for any vehicle requiring an insurance approved tracker is to consider the Ghost 2 immobiliser as a complementary layer of protection. A tracker locates and recovers a stolen vehicle. A Ghost 2 immobiliser prevents the engine from starting without a PIN sequence, stopping the theft before it begins. Many insurers will further recognise the combination of a Thatcham approved tracker and TASSA approved immobiliser at renewal. H-Track install both and will advise on the right combination for your vehicle.
