Truck Tracker Installation
Thatcham Approved Truck Tracker Installation for HGVs and Commercial Vehicles
Truck Tracker Installation
Professional HGV Tracker Installation for Operators Who Cannot Afford Downtime or a Missing Asset.
A truck is not just a vehicle. It is a working asset with a load, a schedule, a driver and a customer waiting at the other end. When a truck goes missing the financial and operational consequences extend far beyond the cost of the vehicle itself. H-Track’s Thatcham approved truck tracker installation gives haulage operators, owner-drivers and fleet managers real-time visibility of every HGV in their operation, with 24/7 monitored security and the documentation their insurers require.
We are based in Stafford and provide truck tracker installation across Staffordshire, the West Midlands, Greater Manchester, Yorkshire, South Yorkshire, Merseyside and Nottinghamshire, covering the key haulage corridors that connect the Midlands and the North.

Why Truck Tracker Installation Has Become Essential for UK Operators
The Risk Goes Beyond a Stolen Vehicle.
HGV theft is not straightforward to quantify because it sits within a broader picture of freight crime, cargo theft and vehicle misuse. Tractor units, tippers and rigids are stolen not just for their own value but because they are the key to further criminal activity. A stolen tractor unit enables trailer theft. A stolen tipper enables fly-tipping operations that leave the registered keeper facing regulatory consequences. Stolen HGVs have been used in ram raids and logistics crime across the UK.
Overnight parking compounds the exposure significantly. A truck parked at a roadside layby or an unsecured yard overnight is a fundamentally different security challenge from a van parked on a driveway. The vehicle is remote, often unsupervised and, in some cases, carrying a load worth multiples of the vehicle itself.
Truck tracker installation with tracking trucks with GPS technology addresses all of this directly. The moment your HGV moves without authorisation a 24/7 professional monitoring centre is alerted and working with UK police to initiate a response. For operators running loads across the Midlands and the North that response capability is not a nice to have. It is the difference between a vehicle and load recovered the same night and a total loss.
Why Professional Truck Tracker Installation Requires Specialist Knowledge
HGVs Are Not Just Big Cars.
The Installation Reflects That.
This is a point every competitor glosses over and H-Track believes is worth being honest about.
Truck and HGV electrical systems run on 24 volt architecture, compared to the 12 volt systems in cars and vans. A tracker designed and installed for a car or van cannot simply be transplanted into an HGV and expected to perform correctly. The device must be compatible with the 24V system and the installation must account for the significantly more complex electrical architecture of a modern heavy goods vehicle.
Professional truck tracker installation on an HGV also requires deeper covert placement than on a car or van. Thieves who target trucks specifically know where to look. A tracker that is easy to locate is a tracker that gets removed. Henry’s 20 years of vehicle security installation experience includes HGV work across a range of makes and models and he understands the difference between an installation that is technically complete and one that will hold up under the specific conditions trucks face.
Tracking trucks with GPS also requires device positioning that maintains signal integrity through the metal chassis components and bodywork of an HGV. Signal reliability is not guaranteed by simply fitting a compatible device. It requires a professional who understands how GPS signal behaves inside a large commercial vehicle and how to position the unit to maintain a constant lock.

H-Track's Recommendation Guide for HGV Operators
S7 or S5 Truck Tracker Installation,
The Honest Assessment.
H-Track’s approach is to recommend the tracker that genuinely fits the vehicle, the operation and the risk. Here is how we assess the right category for truck and HGV operators:
If your insurer has specified a category
Follow it precisely. For HGVs and commercial vehicles with a market value above £40,000 many UK insurers now mandate S5 as a condition of cover rather than leaving it to the operator’s discretion. If your policy specifies S5 the S5 is what you need fitted and H-Track will make sure the installation and certification satisfies that requirement completely.
If your truck carries high-value cargo regularly
H-Track’s recommendation is the S5. The S5’s Automatic Driver Recognition means the monitoring centre is alerted the moment the vehicle moves without the authorised driver’s tag present. For a truck carrying a load worth significantly more than the vehicle itself that early warning capability is the right level of protection.
If your truck is parked overnight away from a secure depot
H-Track’s recommendation is the S5. Overnight roadside and layby parking removes the passive deterrence of a supervised environment. A truck in that situation needs a tracker that flags unauthorised movement immediately, before the vehicle and any load has been moved to a secondary location.
If your operation involves keyless entry trucks
H-Track’s recommendation is the S5 without exception. Relay theft methods apply to keyless HGVs as directly as they do to keyless cars. The S5’s ADR tag is the specific countermeasure and for a keyless truck it is the appropriate minimum regardless of the load value or overnight parking situation.
If your truck is older, lower value and has a traditional key
The S7 provides solid Thatcham approved protection and satisfies most commercial vehicle insurance requirements where S5 has not been specifically mandated. Real-time GPS tracking, 24/7 monitored recovery and tamper alerting are all included. For an older asset where the risk profile does not justify the S5 the S7 is the proportionate and correct recommendation.
Unsure which applies to your fleet? Call H-Track before booking. We will give you a direct honest assessment based on your specific vehicles, your operation and what your insurers actually require.

Truck Tracker Installation Across Every HGV and Commercial Vehicle Type
From Owner-Driver
to Multi-Vehicle Operator.
H-Track fit truck trackers across the full range of heavy commercial vehicles operated by businesses across our seven regions:
Tractor units The most targeted HGV type for organised criminal gangs. A stolen tractor unit enables a range of further criminal activity beyond the vehicle itself. H-Track’s recommendation for every tractor unit is the S5, the early alerting capability of Automatic Driver Recognition is the appropriate level of protection for an asset of this operational and security significance.
Rigid lorries and distribution trucks Used extensively across the Midlands and the North for regional distribution. Overnight depot and roadside parking creates consistent overnight exposure. Truck tracker installation on rigid lorries gives operators live location data and immediate alerting if the vehicle moves outside authorised hours or locations.
Tippers and construction vehicles Tippers are targeted both for the vehicle and for their use in fly-tipping operations. A stolen tipper registered to your business creates significant regulatory exposure beyond the financial loss of the vehicle. H-Track’s truck tracker installation on tippers includes geofencing capability that alerts operators if the vehicle moves to an unauthorised location.
Curtainsiders and boxvans with high-value loads Where the load value significantly exceeds the vehicle value the S5 is the correct recommendation regardless of insurer mandate. The operational consequence of losing a load in transit is not just the replacement cost, it is the customer relationship, the contract and the insurance claim process that follows.
Refrigerated vehicles Food and pharmaceutical loads carried in refrigerated vehicles represent a consistent target for cargo theft. Truck tracker GPS installation on refrigerated vehicles gives operators the ability to respond to an unauthorised movement before a temperature-sensitive load is compromised or lost entirely.
Owner-driver trucks For the owner-driver running a single truck the financial consequences of theft are existential rather than just operational. H-Track provides the same quality of truck tracker installation and certification for a single vehicle as we do for an operator running a full fleet. The level of service does not change based on the size of the operation.
When Tracking Trucks With GPS Becomes More Than Security
Security Tracking and Operational Visibility
Are Not the Same Thing.
Thatcham approved truck tracker installation addresses the security and insurance compliance requirement. For operators managing multiple trucks the operational dimension is equally important and that is where tracking trucks with GPS for fleet management purposes adds a separate layer of value.
H-Track Fleet Vehicles gives operators live location of every truck in real time, driver behaviour monitoring, journey history, fuel reporting and operational compliance data in one dashboard. Combined with the security monitoring of a Thatcham approved tracker the two systems together give operators complete visibility from the moment a truck leaves the depot to the moment it returns.
The fuel saving case for tracking trucks with GPS is particularly strong for HGV operators. Fuel is the single largest controllable operating cost in a truck fleet. Idling, poor routing and driver behaviour all affect fuel consumption in ways that are invisible without GPS data. Operators who actively use fleet tracking data to manage these factors consistently reduce fuel costs in ways that compound meaningfully over a quarter and a year.
H-Track install and support both Thatcham approved truck trackers and H-Track Fleet Vehicles from the same directly employed engineer team. One company, one point of contact, complete operational and security coverage for every truck in your fleet.
The Certificate That Keeps Your Commercial Policy Valid
How Truck Tracker Installation
Protects Your Insurance Position.
Two outcomes follow a professional Thatcham approved truck tracker installation carried out by H-Track.
Your insurer’s requirement is satisfied on the day Your full Thatcham installation certificate is ready before our engineer leaves your vehicle. Send it to your insurer immediately. No delays, no resubmission, no queries about whether the installer was registered. A valid certificate from a TASSA registered installer that your insurer will accept without question.
Your premium may reduce at renewal Thatcham approved truck tracker installation is recognised by UK insurers as measurable risk reduction on commercial vehicle policies. For operators running high-value trucks or trucks with high-value loads regularly the reduction can be significant. H-Track’s recommendation is to speak to your insurer before booking and ask specifically what reduction applies once the certificate is provided.
One critical note. The Thatcham installation certificate is only valid when the truck tracker installation is carried out by a TASSA registered installer. An unregistered fitter produces no valid certificate regardless of whether the product itself carries Thatcham approval. H-Track are TASSA registered. Every truck tracker we fit comes with documentation your insurer will accept.
HGV Installation Requires More Than a Van Installer With a Bigger Vehicle
20 Years Experience, Directly Employed Engineers and Honest Operational Advice.
Truck tracker installation is a more technically demanding job than car or van installation. The 24V electrical system, the complexity of modern HGV electronics and the need for genuinely covert placement that will not be found by a targeted theft gang all require a level of experience and knowledge that not every installer brings.
Henry has spent over 20 years in vehicle security installation across every vehicle type we cover, including HGVs and commercial vehicles. He understands the specific technical requirements of truck tracker installation and approaches every HGV job with the same rigour he applies to a prestige car. Every engineer we deploy is a directly employed H-Track team member, DBS checked, TASSA registered and accountable.
We cover the haulage corridors that matter to operators based in the Midlands and the North. Staffordshire, the West Midlands, Greater Manchester, Yorkshire, South Yorkshire, Merseyside and Nottinghamshire are all within our installation and support area. For operators running trucks across these regions H-Track provides a local specialist relationship that a national call centre cannot replicate.
We will also come to your depot, yard or site. Bringing an HGV off the road for an installation that should be carried out at your premises is not acceptable and H-Track does not ask operators to do it.

FAQ
ask us
anything
What is Truck tracker installation?
Truck tracker installation is the professional fitting of a Thatcham approved GPS tracking device to an HGV, lorry or commercial vehicle by a TASSA registered engineer. The system communicates with a 24/7 professional monitoring centre that tracks your truck's location and alerts UK police immediately in the event of unauthorised movement. H-Track provide truck tracker installation across Staffordshire, the West Midlands, Greater Manchester, Yorkshire, South Yorkshire, Merseyside, Nottinghamshire, Shropshire, Derbyshire, Leicestershire, Gloucestershire, Warwickshire, Powys, Flintshire, Herefordshire, Oxfordshire and Lincolnshire.
Is truck tracker installation different from car or van tracker installation?
Yes, and meaningfully so. HGVs run on 24 volt electrical systems compared to the 12 volt systems in cars and vans. The tracker device must be compatible with the 24V architecture and the installation must account for the more complex electrical systems in modern heavy goods vehicles. GPS signal positioning also requires specific knowledge of how signal behaves through HGV bodywork and chassis. H-Track's engineers understand these requirements and approach truck tracker installation with the technical knowledge HGV work demands.
Which tracker does my truck need, S5 or S7?
H-Track's recommendation depends on your insurer's stated requirement, whether your truck has keyless entry, the value of loads you carry and your overnight parking situation. For any truck with a market value above £40,000 many UK insurers now mandate S5 as a condition of cover. For keyless trucks the S5 is the appropriate minimum. For older, lower-value trucks where keyless entry is not a factor and S5 has not been mandated the S7 provides solid Thatcham approved protection. Call H-Track before booking and we will give you a direct recommendation based on your specific operation.
Can H-Track fit truck trackers at our depot?
Yes, and this is how we prefer to work with truck operators. Bringing an HGV off the road unnecessarily is not acceptable and H-Track comes to your depot, yard or site. We work around your operational schedule to minimise disruption.
How does truck tracker installation help with fleet management?
Thatcham approved truck tracker installation provides 24/7 monitored security and insurance compliance. For operators wanting operational visibility alongside that security H-Track Fleet Vehicles adds live location tracking, driver behaviour monitoring, journey history, fuel reporting and compliance data in one dashboard. H-Track install and support both from the same engineer team.
Will truck tracker installation reduce my insurance premium?
For most operators yes. Thatcham approved truck tracker installation is recognised by UK insurers as measurable risk reduction on commercial vehicle policies. The saving varies by insurer and fleet profile but for operators running high-value trucks the reduction can be significant. H-Track recommend speaking to your insurer before booking to establish what reduction applies once the Thatcham installation certificate is provided.
How long does truck tracker installation take per vehicle?
Most HGV truck tracker installations take two to three hours per vehicle. The 24V system and more complex installation requirements make truck installation more involved than a car or van. H-Track plan multi-vehicle depot visits to minimise the total time your trucks are off the road.
What areas do H-Track cover for truck tracker installation?
H-Track carry out truck tracker installation across Staffordshire, the West Midlands, Greater Manchester, Yorkshire, South Yorkshire, Merseyside, Nottinghamshire, Shropshire, Derbyshire, Leicestershire, Gloucestershire, Warwickshire, Powys, Flintshire, Herefordshire, Oxfordshire and Lincolnshire, covering the key haulage corridors across the Midlands and the North.
